about

(PSY-041)

Emptiness.
A place where horizons cease to exist
waves rolling into themselves
microscopic decay
form/formless
timeless
mutable
unified tone
universal oscillations
clusters
chance
chaotic structure

“This recording came into being largely on an autumn afternoon...living near Port Phillip Bay (Elwood, Melbourne, Australia) I was struck by the light of the late afternoon..the horizon melted into itself, the sky indistinguishable from the sea. It struck me as I thought about this in relation to sound...how everything came from the same space...maybe it took on a shape...or was fashioned into some form or other via concious action...but ultimately it always returned to the same space. Then I went to the studio and began a series of improvisations holding this thought in mind. This music is probably the most "natural" form I have been involved with...these basic principals used to generate the music have been a part of my repartoire since my beginnings in 1975 when I first ventured into electronic music....So it is appropriate that I dedicate this CD to all my teachers (musical and otherwise), and additionally to all my students.”.......Ollie Olsen

Ollie Olsen

Ollie Olsen has been producing innovative music in Australia since the Punk heyday of the late 70’s Ollie formed one of the first electronic bands Whirlywirld who released two seminal records before he and band mate John Murphy headed for the UK.
During the next ten years Ollie formed experimental outfits Hugo Klang and Orchestra of Skin and Bone and the hard-core industrial techno band NO.
NO were the forerunners of bands like Ministry (who have cited NO as an influence) and Nine Inch Nails. It was during this time that Ollie was engaged as a music producer for the movie Dogs In Space, providing much of the soundtrack himself including writing the hit song 'Rooms For The Memory' for INXS front man and the movie’s star Michael Hutchence.
After a brief collaboration with U2 on the single New York New York by Echo Homo, Ollie was approached by Michael Hutchence to produce an album together. the result was the very successful and critically acclaimed MAX Q which provided the hits Way Of the World and Sometimes. Ollie also worked at this time with legendary American producer Todd Terry and up-and-coming UK producer Paul Oakenfold.
From the success of MAX Q came a major record company deal and Ollie formed the band Third Eye which was predecessor of bands like The Shamen and Prodigy. The group made one critically acclaimed album of songs before Ollie decided to concentrate on instrumental electronic music.
At the start of the 90’s Ollie and manager Bruce Butler formed Psy - Harmonics, Australia’s first purely electronic music label. The first release was Third Eye’s second album Ancient Future. Since then Psy-Harmonics has released over forty albums by many of Australia’s most innovative electronic artists. Some, such as Zen Paradox, Mystic Force and LumuKanda have gone on to enjoy international success. Ollie is also collaborator & producer of a number of the label’s acts such as Antediluvian Rocking Horse, Psyko Disko, Fluro Conspiracy, and the Visitors. he also discovered the first band from cyber space, the Shaolin Wooden Men.
Ollie has also been involved in more soundtrack work including the TV series RAW-FM and the movie Head On.
As the 90’s comes to a close Ollie is expanding the influence of Psy-Harmonics, and releases his debut solo album ‘Emptiness’.
